Contesting Erasure: Embodied Memory, Unruly Arts, and Aesthetic Resistance
Voiceless Shouts, Unruly Arts & Embodied Resistance invites submissions for its inaugural issue, “Contesting Erasure: Embodied Memory, Unruly Arts, and Aesthetic Resistance.”
Erasure is not only the absence of names from archives, histories, institutions, and canons. It is also the distortion of memory, the misrecognition of cultural production, the appropriation of creative practices, the silencing of embodied knowledge, and the refusal to acknowledge the arts as legitimate sites of theory, history, and political intervention.
This inaugural issue asks: How have communities used the body, the arts, performance, ritual, sound, visuality, movement, spatial practice, and material culture to resist erasure? How do creative and performative practices preserve memory, challenge inherited epistemologies, intervene in public life, and generate new forms of knowledge? How might the “unruly arts”—those that resist aesthetic containment, institutional domestication, and disciplinary conformity—help us rethink the relationship between art, history, resistance, and world-making?
We welcome submissions that examine embodied knowledge, artistic practice, and aesthetic resistance across Africana, diasporic, Indigenous, and Global Majority contexts. We are especially interested in work that foregrounds the body as archive, the arts as theory, and creative practice as a mode of cultural, political, and intellectual intervention.
Submissions may include scholarly articles, creative-critical essays, practice-based research, interviews, artist statements, review essays, and multimodal scholarship. As a digital journal, Voiceless Shouts welcomes work that incorporates video, sound, image, or interactive media alongside written analysis, provided that all submissions meet the journal’s standards of intellectual rigor and peer review.
Submissions should be academically rigorous while remaining accessible to readers beyond narrow disciplinary audiences.
