Call for Editors

Voiceless Shouts, Unruly Arts & Embodied Resistance is a peer-reviewed, open-access digital journal dedicated to the rigorous exploration of embodied knowledge, artistic practice, and aesthetic resistance. Centering African, African Diaspora, Indigenous, and Global Majority perspectives, the journal examines how creative and performative practices function as sites of theory, archives of history, and modes of political and cultural intervention.

We seek editors who are committed to interdisciplinary scholarship, decolonial inquiry, ethical editorial practice, and the advancement of rigorous work that bridges the academy, creative spaces, and public life. Editors will help shape the intellectual direction of the journal and support its mission to foreground the body as archive, the arts as theory, and embodied practices as essential forms of knowledge production.

The journal is especially interested in editors whose work engages the “unruly arts”—creative and performative practices that resist aesthetic containment, institutional domestication, disciplinary conformity, or cultural erasure. We welcome scholars, artists, cultural workers, curators, archivists, public humanists, and practitioners whose expertise aligns with the journal’s commitment to embodied knowledge, artistic resistance, cultural memory, and methodological innovation.

Areas of Interest

We welcome interest from individuals with expertise in one or more of the following areas:

Embodied knowledge, performance, movement, ritual, and gesture
African, African diasporic, Indigenous, and Global Majority arts and expressive cultures
Dance, theatre, music, visual culture, film, literature, sound, and material culture
Aesthetic resistance, cultural memory, archival absence, and acts of recovery
Practice-based research, creative-critical scholarship, and multimodal inquiry
Decolonial, Indigenous, and anti-racist methodologies
Public humanities, community-based cultural work, museums, archives, and heritage practice
Digital culture, technology, artificial intelligence, ethics, and the politics of representation

Editorial Roles

We invite expressions of interest for several editorial roles, including but not limited to:

Specific roles will be shaped by the needs of the journal and the expertise of selected applicants.

Editorial Responsibilities

Editors may assist with:

Reviewing submissions for alignment with the journal’s mission and scope
Identifying qualified peer reviewers
Supporting the peer-review process
Providing editorial guidance to authors
Developing themed sections, special issues, interviews, reviews, or creative-critical features
Advising on multimodal submissions that incorporate video, sound, image, or interactive media
Helping cultivate the journal’s scholarly, artistic, and public-facing presence
Promoting ethical, rigorous, accessible, and culturally accountable publishing practices

Qualifications

Applicants should have a record of scholarly, artistic, editorial, curatorial, archival, or public humanities work relevant to the mission of the journal. Prior editorial experience is welcome, but it is not required for all roles.

We are especially interested in individuals who bring interdisciplinary perspectives, ethical commitments, and a demonstrated investment in amplifying knowledge systems, histories, practices, and communities that have been marginalized, misrecognized, appropriated, or erased.

Seasoned & early-career scholars, independent scholars, artists, and community-based cultural workers with relevant expertise are encouraged to apply for appropriate editorial roles, including assistant editor, reviews editor, digital scholarship editor, or editorial board positions.
